Strickland's View on Abortion

From Blackwell v Strickland

From January's NARAL press release:

“As governor,” Congressman Strickland said, “I would veto any legislation to further restrict access to reproductive health care including abortion.”

Well that's pretty extreme:

no waiting periods?
no new late term restrictions? (most of Europe has tough restrictions after 10 weeks,
no regulations to reduce fetal pain?
No new parental consent/notification?

WSJ Picks up on Sore Loser Law

From votelaw

Washington Wire (the Wall Street Journal) reports: The Jack Abramoff scandal that rocked Capitol Hill last winter claimed its second electoral victim as Ohio Republican Rep. Bob Ney announced Monday he will abandon his re-election race. But as Republicans try to hold onto the seat, questions are arising over the "sore loser" provision in Ohio election law. ...

State Sen. Joy Padgett, Ney’s hand-picked successor for his seat, could fall under a little-known provision of Ohio election law, dubbed the “sore loser” provision. It prevents a candidate who loses in one primary from running in another during the same election cycle. Earlier this year, Padgett was the primary running mate of gubernatorial hopeful James Petro, who lost to the ticket of Ken Blackwell and his running mate, Ohio State Rep. Tom Raga.

Even if Padgett succeeds in getting her name on the new primary ballot, the controversy could invite other Republicans to jump into the unexpected race. James Harris, who lost to Ney in the Republican primary in May, said he’s considering running again — although the sore loser provision may apply to him, too.

Did We Miss a Debate?

From Openers

Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell and his Democrat rival Ted Strickland were scheduled to face off Tuesday at Lakeland Community College during and interview by the editors of the News Herald.

The event, on which the paper will base its gubernatorial endorsement, was taped for later broadcast. But Blackwell had to go it alone because Strickland backed out, claiming the interview format too closely resembled a debate. The candidates agreed earlier to just four debates that don’t include the New Herald.

Strickland plans to meet the editors Wednesday.

Blackwell’s spokesman Carlo LoParo said the campaign, which trails in the polls, didn’t consider the event a debate.

1. They had to mention the polls.

2. If Strickland backed out and they are using this to judge their endorsement, then Blackwell should get their endorsement, right?

3. What would have been the media fallout if Ken Blackwell backed out?

God, this picture is so awesome. What a great poster for college this would make.

In case you didn't notice...

Rasmussen predicted a 10-point margin of victory for Ned Lamont in the Conneticut Senate primary. While he did beat Lieberman, his actual margin was less than half of that. Keep that in mind the next time you see a Rasmussen poll on the Ohio governor's race. That could apply to SurveyUSA as well, since they use the exact same methodology.

Ohio Dems desperate for something to complain about

File this under Are you f'ing serious?

In 2004, Secretary of State Ken Blackwell changed the sticker to read "Change Our World, Vote Your Conscience."

The Summit County Board of Elections will vote Monday to decide whether voters will receive the stickers during the November election.

"I would prefer to go with just 'I Voted Today,'" said board member Russ Pry, a Democrat, who questioned whether there was a religious agenda behind the change.

Brian Rothenberg, a spokesman for the Ohio Democratic Party, said Blackwell, who is the Republican candidate for governor, is using the sticker to send "some type of religious message."

First of all, you don't get the sticker until after you vote, so what would be the point?

And secondly, since when do Democrats know anything about conveying a message?

In fact, maybe the ODP should take a break from spinning conspiracy theories and help Taft Strickland come up with some kind of real platform.
