Voinovich’s prescient speech failed to affect tax-cut outcome

DAVID BRODER
David Broder is the "Dean of Conventional Wisdom". The next time he gives an original and insightful political analysis will be the first. If you read the article, it sounds like Voinovich wrote it with Broder's by-line.
But let's take a look at what Broder is praising:
"Without further ado, let me then quote extensively from a speech delivered May 3 on the floor of the Senate by George V. Voinovich, a Republican from Ohio – a speech which, by the way, drew almost no comment from his colleagues or from the apparently benumbed press corps."
This should have been Broder's first clue that what was coming out of Voinovich's mouth wasn't worth the spit swallowed during the speech.
Voinovich selectively quotes Alan Greenspan:
"We should not be cutting taxes by borrowing."
Then leaves of the rest of the quote:
"We do not have the capability of having both productive tax cuts and large expenditure increases, and presume that the deficit doesn't matter."
Greenspan was saying that you can't pass tax cuts that grow the economy and increase revenue, and then spend even more than the increased revenue brought in. His was a rebuke was of out of control spending, not tax cuts. Voinovich nor Broder understands this concept, because it doesn't follow the typical template of the legacy Media, and would require independent thought.
Voinovich rails against the unfunded obligations of Medicare and Social Security, but refused to support Pres. Bush's efforts to reform them (because it was unpopular with the Media). He wants to raise taxes temporarily to pay for the War and Katrina, then votes against extending for 2 years the tiniest tax cut that increased the tax revenue to record levels (because it was unpopular with the Media).
You can read the rest to understand that Voinovich has no clue of what he is talking about. This is why he is popular with the Media and Democrats, because he lives in the same alternate reality as they do. He is not respected by anyone on either side of the aisle; but he is the Democrats favorite useful idiot.
