Media Appearance: For What It's Worth
Submitted by Steven J. Kelso Sr. on July 5, 2006 - 5:35pm. blogsKaren Kasler was well prepared and knowledgeable about blogs and I appreciate the opportunity to speak for the right side of the Ohio blogosphere.
Russell Hughlock (know to his fans as "Staff") from BuckeyeStateBlog was exactly what you'd expect from a Brit: perfect for a political debate in a pub where the ale is flowing and the waitresses are well-endowed. I thank him for his graciousness.

Blackwell Defends His Plans for the Ohio Turnpike
Submitted by Steven J. Kelso Sr. on July 5, 2006 - 6:27pm. RepublicansFrom the Akron Beacon Journal:
Not too long ago, Ohio was an economic powerhouse, with millions of jobs in growing industries that were the envy of the world.
Unfortunately, we have now fallen miserably behind. Since 1970, Ohio's share of the nation's personal income has declined 28 percent. As of May, Ohio had the fifth-highest unemployment rate in the United States, at 5.5 percent, versus the national rate of 4.6 percent.
Ohio ranks 47th in small business start-ups, 49th in bankruptcies and 50th (dead last) in job creation. Ohio's economy is lagging and growing worse, when our great state should be leading the way.
Ohio's next governor needs to stop the state's job loss and create an environment of economic hope and prosperity.
As governor, I will apply new, innovative ideas to make that happen. And I will bring new strength and energy to tackle these challenges and reverse our economic fortunes.
One of my key ideas is to leverage the value of the Ohio Turnpike and create a $4 billion to $6 billion economic development fund that the private sector can use to create new jobs.
I understand the libertarian thinking behind the plan, but with most roads built and maintained by the state, I do not believe that the taxpayers will be treated fairly. That road has been paid for several times over and I believe that the tolls should be eliminated in order to attract trucking traffic and make it easier for tourists to travel the Buckeye state. Why give the government more money to waste?
Am I wrong?

"Peace Activist" Attacks Rocker
From The New Zealand Herald:
A New Zealand peace activist is facing serious assault charges after he allegedly punched a rock singer in London, leaving the man in a coma.
Moral of the story? Never P/O a "peace" activist -- it could be dangerous to your health.
"2nd Annual Old Time American Flag Burn."
From the Santa Cruz Sentinel:
About 25 revelers celebrated their freedom of speech and welcomed the Fourth of July on Monday night with the "2nd Annual Old Time American Flag Burn."
Why would they do such a thing?
"It seemed like a good idea to burn some flags just because we can," added fellow organizer Sha Lar, 32, of Santa Cruz.
Ah, yes -- rumor has it that Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence for the same "reason."
And finally...
From MSNBC.com:
"Wrong and immoral"
Activist Cindy Sheehan, who is leading a hunger strike against the war in Iraq, tells Norah O'Donnell she would rather live under Hugo Chavez than George W. Bush.
I suppose that I could inform Miss Sheehan that she would be thrown in prison if she lived under Hugo Chavez and criticized Hugo Chavez, but that it so easy it hurts. Instead, let me tell a joke that President Ronald Reagan was quite fond of:
...I'd been collecting stories about the Russians: I told him one about an American and a Russian who were arguing about the respective merits of their countries. The American said, "Look, in my country I can walk into the Oval Office and I can pound on the president's desk and say, Mr. President, I don't like the way you are running the country,'" to which the Russian said, "I can do that, too." The American said, "You can?" and his friend said: "Sure, I can go into the Kremlin and pound on the General Secretary's desk and say, Mr. General Secretary, I don't like the way President Reagan is running his country.'" The interpreter translated the joke, and when he got to the punch line, Gorbachev howled.
Cindy: don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya!
