Back then, Hackett said he had "Irish Alzheimer's - you know what that is, you forget everything but a grudge."
But as the two stood side-by-side Monday in a Cincinnati park on the Ohio River that is dedicated to world peace, Hackett said his grudge had faded away over the months. It was while mowing his lawn last Thursday that he decided to offer Brown an apology.
"How we got here today, it's really not all that complicated," Hackett said. "Somewhere in the heat, and the grass clippings and the gasoline fumes, I decided to pick up the phone and have a conversation with Sherrod."
He said he still had Brown's number on his cell phone...
More Bad Press for Marc Dann

Federal investigators want to talk to Marc Dann about missing money, but this probe has nothing to do with his favorite subject, Coingate.
Dann, the Youngstown-area state senator and Democratic candidate for attorney general, defaulted on a student loan in 1993, according to a complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court. Dann owes $3,779 in principal and $5,655 in interest for a student loan he took out in 1986, Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard French said.
The case is being pursued in federal court because the loan was guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Education.
Dann's says he's been disputing this claim for more than two years. He said he consolidated all his loans after law school, and moved a dozen times before settling in Youngstown, so it's possible this fell through the cracks, but he doubts it.
Poor Marc.

Giuliani, who has topped several national 2008 presidential polls in recent months, was to headline a cocktail reception in Cleveland on Monday night for two-term Sen. Mike DeWine. DeWine faces a stiff re-election challenge from Democratic Rep. Sherrod Brown.
Giuliani touches down in three states Tuesday, attending events for Arkansas gubernatorial candidate Asa Hutchinson, Illinois gubernatorial hopeful Judy Baer Topinka, and Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. He'll also take in the All-Star baseball game in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.
