Frank Jackson Cutting Spending in Cleveland

From Crain's

In a media briefing today, Darnell Brown, the city’s chief operating officer, said the city has begun to implement an efficiency initiative that he and the mayor expect will reduce city spending by $15 million, or 3% of the budget, across all departments starting with the 2007 budget.

Good luck Mr. Mayor.

Cut Taxes and They Will Move Back

From Opinion Journal.com

On the other hand, Ohio gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell vows, if elected, to cut taxes and to support a tax-and-expenditure limit to curb the growth of state spending. The 2005 numbers clearly support his approach to economic prosperity. Low taxes expand economic opportunities and lift a state's personal income, employment, and tax revenues. It's a lot easier to close a budget gap when the economy is growing and more money is flowing into the state's coffers (assuming the legislature doesn't spend the new revenue faster than it comes in).

Makes economic sense.

Ted Strickland Schedule Problem

From Openers

Strickland blew an opportunity to schmooze the friendly crowd. His campaign scheduled another appearance for Strickland immediately following his interview with the pastors, forcing him to pull away from a line of people who wanted to talk to him.

Uh oh.

Dear Sen. DeWine,

Even though I worked on the staff of Bill Pierce in the primary, I have been trying real hard to rally some troops to the polls to vote for you so we don't get stuck with Sherrod Brown.

I do so despite the fact that you still haven't asked us for our vote... Would it kill you to actually give me a hand and stop acting like a buffoon?

Seriously. That would be great.

Thanks,
MATT HURLEY

Is Ted Strickland Pro-Gun?

Nope.

Listening to Rush today it's my understanding that the "Honarable Senators from Ohio", have voted against making protecting borders a priority in new legislation! Our Senators of Ohio again voted with Demoncrats against a conservative ideal.

Time to develop, and support conservative Senators for Ohio in DC. Time for both of them to consider retirement.

Time for Ohioans to become active to get this done!

TEL is Done...Watch Out Democrats

From his press release

"I am pleased Speaker Husted and Senate President Harris have committed to the adoption of statutory state government spending restraints," said Blackwell. "We have agreed in principle to general concepts the legislation will contain. Specifics are left for the legislative process."

"The General Assembly leaders have informed me it is their intention to adopt this legislation by the end of next week," added Blackwell. "I have agreed, upon adoption, to contact Citizens for Tax Reform and encourage the petition committee to withdraw the TEL amendment."

"Once enacted, Ohio will have the necessary fiscal guard rails in our budgeting process to control government spending, cut taxes and create jobs," said Blackwell. "Working with the leadership of the General Assembly, I will continue to pursue a legislative agenda to encourage entrepreneurship and get our economy moving again."

Now the Strickland campaign is going to say this is a flip flop and we'd say the same thing if we were Democrats, but if Blackwell gets what he wants then who cares? Actually this is bad news for the Democrats since many moderate Republicans will come back home.

Bradley v. Coleman?

Red-state.com discusses this further.

Blackwell Wins... Before He Wins

Cross-posted at Lincoln Logs.

In response to the news that Ken Blackwell is seeking other solutions instead of TEL.

I guess the thing I am most shocked at is the fact that Ken Blackwell supporters truly believed that he would never: A. Have to, B. Choose to compromise.

We will hear shouts of “We thought Blackwell was different,” but that is simply insane, so before my fellow conservatives go off the deep end allow me this opportunity to defend Blackwell -

You thought Ken Blackwell was different. You thought he was a leader. You thought he would change state government. Ok. The man just compelled the state legislature to fix their own spending habits and he hasn’t even been elected Governor yet. Slow down… read that again, the man won a victory for fiscal restraint and responsibility over a legislation that has shown no willingness to restrain itself under Bob Taft and he hasn’t even been elected executive of the state yet.

Ted Strickland is busy throwing “flip flop” into every third sentence and introducing yet another tax and spend plan without consideration for who pays for me.

As far as I am concerned Ken Blackwell just proved that the major bump on his political road is bogus. He compelled the legislature to act. Remember, he isn’t supposed to be able to do that. They all supported Petro and Blackwell alienated them. He hasn’t won an election yet and he is building coalitions for good. This isn’t a faux coalition with liberal goals - it is a coalition to institute solutions Ken Blackwell and the people of Ohio want demand to have implemented

Ohio and Blackwell Mentioned on Rush Limbaugh

transcript from Rush Limbaugh.com (audio is here):

...We're not enforcing our own law on the border, and we're spending like idiots, and I think one of the pieces of glue that's holding the conservative movement together today is the detestable, contemptible left. We know the country simply can't be turned over to them. Plus, there are some other signs out there of conservative muscle flexing. There was a literal earthquake in Pennsylvania, just as there was in North Carolina, and just as there was in Ohio.

In these primary elections, RINO Republicans, liberal blue-blood country club Rockefeller Republicans are being thrown out of office, and conservative Republicans are winning in these primaries. So the Republicans in Pennsylvania and Ohio, North Carolina -- and Pennsylvania, this is pretty remarkable. Pennsylvania not known as a hotbed of conservatism, and the Republicans in these primaries just clean the clocks, these conservatives of these old moderate country club Rockefeller blue-blood types, and it's the same thing with Ken Blackwell in Ohio...
