…A far-left nut who insiders from both parties say is within a few points of winning this race.

When this goes down as a close win for Latta, Dems will claim that it’s a bellwhether for 2008. In reality, it is nothing more than lots of R’s wanting nothing to do with the negative tone Latta set in the primary a few weeks ago.

The negative tone may be somewhat to blame; but, there’s a whole lot more important factors that go into this. First and foremost, the date is not conducive to very high turnout. Not to mention, GOP voters are complacent as shown in recent polls. The Dems poll much higher in voter intensity in the 5th. This can be attributed to the timing of the election, the fact that conservatives in the 5th think Bob already won election to Congress in the General/Special Primary (many didn’t even realize there was a Dem primary, as well), conservatives take this district for granted and don’t feel their vote is needed and, quite simply, the Dems smell blood.

This race definitely is not as tight as it is due to the quality of the Dem candidate. She is the Dem’s biggest hurdle right now. Most Dems in NW Ohio are social conservative union Dems, and Robin is a social liberal union exploiter. Just as she, Nancy Pelosi and the DCCC are trying to capitalize on Paul Gillmor’s unfortunate passing to get this seat, Robin runs around the 5th District to union factories that have recently announced layoffs or closings and holds press events in an attempt to capitalize on these unfortunate situations; they’re nothing more than opportunities to her. Robin runs to plant closings like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton run to race riots. Their concern is not actually for the human suffering, but for the advancement of their own careers. She says she’s for the middle-class worker, but she’s paving her attempted path to Congress with the unemployed union worker. She runs around and demonizes NAFTA and CAFTA, instead of addressing the real problems affecting America’s manufacturers. Get around and talk to local manufacturers in the 5th District and ask them how fair trade agreements have affected their business. “Ohio is now the sixth largest exporting state in the country, exporting goods to 200 countries around the world. Four of those countries purchase more than $1 billion of Ohio’s exports. This group includes Canada and Mexico and implies that NAFTA has had a positive impact on the economy of the state.” -Office of Strategic Research, Ohio Department of Development, April 2004
