The Club for Growth has Good Things to Say about Fred Thompson’s Fiscal Conservatism
Read the details here. This is reassuring to me, as I- along with most Republicans- know very little about Fred Thompson.
And then compare that to their review of liberal Mitt Romney. The Club said that Mitt’s record is full of “Promise and Puzzlement.”
OK Matthew, I’ll take the bait…exactly what don’t “most republicans” know about Fred Thompson?
You like to contend that you aren’t on any “inside information” track and yet you like to convey that very thing. Contrary to what you and the other nimrods at the ORP think, we do our homework out here as best we can, so if there’s something you can’t wait to “ambush” us with just so you can say “told you so, I was right,” at a later date, then please, do tell.
Who is Thompson less conservative than? Guiliani? McCain? Romney?
None of the other front-runners, or 2nd tier candidates are going to win the general, period. So if Thompson isn’t your guy, then I guess we are to surmise that you are in the Clinton/Obama camp. You won’t need much luck b/c if you keep tearing apart all the options, you’ll at least be on the winning team this time.
But Club for Growth also pointed out that he signed McCain Feingold, which is not too good.
McCain-Feingold was absolutely a huge mistake and Thompson has been the first to admit as much to anyone who has asked him. That in itself is beyond refreshing…
What makes up for that “ding” IMHO, is the fact that w/o Thompson’s efforts, we very well may NOT have Chief Justice Roberts. Even his beltway detractors give him credit for that.
A major component in any kind of success involves developing, setting and achieving realistic expectations…and the reality is that there is no perfect candidate.
If the GOP is to regain both houses of Congress and keep the White House in 2008, it makes sense that Republicans join ranks and stand shoulder to shoulder in support of the best candidate. As far as I have been able to tell so far, FDT is very close to the right position on every single major issue facing the nation today. He’s repentant about his support of McCain-Feingold, and it’s clear, as Rose pointed out, that no one is perfect. But FDT is the real deal in my book, and I’m fired up about working for him in the coming months. If you love this country and want to protect our liberty (not to mention your own pocketbook, the lives of the unborn, the sanctity of traditional marriage, your right to bear arms, etc.)you should be, too. The stakes in the elections of 2008 are very, very high. We can’t afford to leave our national security in the hands of inexperienced leftists who don’t understand the “to the death” nature of the war we’re fighting.
