Petro Says Indian Gaming Contracts Are Legal but Meaningless

Attorney General Jim Petro said the agreement reached between Indian casinos and cities in Ohio, like Lordstown and Lorain are constitutional but meaningless. The reason they are meaningless due to all of their provisions included in them.

A Good Charter School

This article talks about how an entrepreneurer can create a better school than our public schools can. I’m not surprised. It looks like a Clevelander has taken notice of this school in New Jersey and hopes to start one in our city.

Solon To Limit Officials Spending

Thanks to NC for sending this in.

It looks like the City of Solon, fresh off of killing 602 deer are planning to limit the discretionary spending for local officials. Sounds like a plan that all government entities could learn.

Ohio Down to 16 Electoral Votes?

According to the projected census surveys, it is a possibility by 2030. Read about it HERE.
There is one silver lining, and that’s Ohio might become so cheap comapred to the faster growing states, it might re-attract people again. I guess we’ll take what we can get.

Montgomery Goes After Casino Funding Group

Acting more like an Attorney General, Ohio’s Auditor Betty Montgomery has passed along information about a pro-gambling investment corporation entitled “A Piece of the Action” to the “Commerce Department’s securities division to determine if the company violated securities laws.” It looks like the anti-casino people are not backing down one iota in their quest to prevent casinos from establishing a beachhead in Ohio. And also it looks like each of the GOP candidates for Governor (execpt for Pete Draganic who’s in favor of casinos in Ohio) are trying to one-up each other for the anti-gambling votes.

Big Name GOPers Meet in Cleveland

Would this be considered a convention?

“The nation’s top Republican Party official told GOP leaders gathering Friday to discuss President Bush’s second-term agenda that they are members of the party of progress while Democrats are a party of “reactionary liberalism.”‘

Finally Ohio gets some props.

Ohio Processing Immigrants Faster than Average

Hooray!

Candidate Website Updates

Of the 4 Republican governor candidates, only Ken Blackwell and Pete Draganic have recently updated information on their website. Look, if we want to stay up to date on your campaigns, please keep your websites more updated. (Pet Peeve of us here) If you are not going to bother to update your website, do not waste the money on it. An outdated website is almost as bad as no website at all. Here are the two most recent updates.

Ken Blackwell - Pro-Blackwell article from Citizen Magazine.

Pete Draganic - Happy in the “middle.”

State Won’t Pay for Viagra Anymore

In order to save $455,000 from its Medicare fund, the Ohio legislature voted to eliminate the funding for Viagra and other similar drugs from the state Medicaid fund. Last year, Ohio “paid a total of $455,747 last year for Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis for 1,441 patients.” If it saves 455k a year, then we’re all for it!

Remember you can always e-mail us at [email protected]

UPDATE: According to the Columbus Dispatch, Ohio is going to pay for Viagra whether they like it or not. Thank you federal government. (thanks for the reader who sent this in)

Charter Schools are GOOD for Education

Read this report. It shows that although schools will leave the public schools for charter schools, the public schools per pupil funding amount actually increases. See it HERE.

Taft’s Plan = 43,000 New Jobs

According to a recently study if Taft’s tax reform is passed, Ohio can look forward to creating 43,000 new jobs in five years. “The report from Massachusetts-based REMI Consulting Inc. also says the plan will add $2.5 billion to Ohio’s gross state product. The Department of Development paid $154,000 for the 133-page report released Thursday.” If these tidbits get picked up in the media, Taft’s plan should gain some serious momentum.

Ohio’s High Tech Job Losses Slowly

Well I guess we can call this a partial victory when it looks like “Ohio has continued to lose high-tech jobs, but the pace has slowed and is stabilizing.”

Governor Taft looks like he is going to push the Third Frontier initiative again, but combine it with $2 billion worth of bonds for road and bridge construction. Remember the 3rd Frontier only failed by less than 1% in 2003.

Ohioans Still Support Term Limits

2/3rds of Ohioans still support term limits, although many said they would be willing to increase the term limits from 8 to 12 years.

More Private Gambling Meetings

From the front page of the Beacon Journal. What is quite surprising is that because of all the differing gaming interests and their desire to individually dominate the Ohio gambling scene, they have all caused the state to fall behind the race to get casinos in the mid west. By not agreeing and coming together, the state still does not have casinos, and the prospects of getting them still are quite weak. We’ll see if this new tone will work.

Good Job Cleveland Schools

“Cleveland’s public school system will refund $729,000 to the state for overstating the number of students that use the district’s buses.”

And we wonder why Cleveland isn’t taken seriously at the statehouse.

Keep Primary Day in March for the Prez

Rep. Jim Trakas wants to keep Ohio’s primary in March for Presidential elections. “Ohio loses a lot of clout if it purposely extricates itself from the presidential race in the primaries. You get stuck with whoever the small states and the South nominate,” Trakas said.

Keep it in March so advertising dollars from the candidates will pour into the state, if we have it in May the primary election will be over.

Happenings at the Statehouse

Regulating adult stores and granting bail to violent criminals were topics yesterday at the Statehouse. Read about it HERE.

Summit County Starts Down a Slippery Path

They just announced they are going to dip into their surplus general fund for pay increases and more hiring; instead of a proposed spending freeze. This was approved even though “The county is expected to lose roughly $1.2 million next year in local government money from the state, and other revenue sources are flat.” Good work, can’t wait until next year’s budget.

UPDATE: look at this spending splurge by the county!

Petro Takes on Universities

“Petro would also apply consolidation and restructuring to Ohio's state universities, creating a centralized office that would coordinate degrees and programs among the schools to reduce duplication and save money. The cost of a four-year degree in Ohio is 47 percent higher than the national average”

The question remains, why are our universities so much more expensive than the national average?
