Three weeks before Election Day, Franklin County Democrats are considering yanking party support from a Columbus school-board candidate who has irked organized labor.

Stephanie Groce, who was appointed to the board in 2006 and is seeking a full term in the Nov. 6 election, has said she would consider privatizing Columbus city schools’ cafeteria operations and suggested last year that the district should freeze employees’ salaries until it stems a loss of students to charter schools.

She didn’t get an endorsement last month from the district’s teachers union, whose president said Groce is no friend of labor. The Democrats’ central and executive committees will meet tonight to decide whether to rescind their support as well.

County Democratic Chairman William A. Anthony Jr., who’s also a staff representative for the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, told Groce in a letter last week that party leaders and others have come to him with “grave concerns” about her positions on issues such as charter schools and unions.

“They feel your views are not consistent with many of the party’s core values,” he wrote.

Groce said yesterday that she’s not anti-labor but considers herself a fiscally conservative, “patently independent Democrat.” She joked last year that her husband considers her a Republican; county records showed she voted in the GOP’s 2000 primary.

Dissent will not be allowed in the Democrat party when it comes to crossing the types of organizations which provide campaign contributions and other support to Dem candidates.

It is funny how Democrats feel comfortable attacking Stephanie, even though she is a parent when many school board members are not. I guess she dared to put the interest of students ahead of unions, and look what happened!
